As such, there are many nursing positions available, though there are not many nursing schools in North Carolina.

Those who wish to attend nursing schools in North Carolina can do so at Duke, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill as well as several others. There are also a few vocational schools and community colleges that offer certificate nursing programs, such as for CNAs and LPNs.

The certificate program for a CNA is about 12 weeks and LPNs are a little longer than that, taking about one year to complete. Registered nurses will need a bachelor’s degree while specialized and clinical nurses will need a master’s degree. Respectively, these degrees take a total of four and six years to earn.

The graduation rate across the country for nurses is about 67%. The actual graduation rate in NC will depend on the North Carolina Nursing Schools that are attended. Costs for the schools can vary as well, though the federal government offers grants and there are many scholarships from private organizations including the Lions Club as well as minority and veteran scholarships available as well.

Career Outlook for Nursing in North Carolina
Attending North Carolina Nursing Schools can be promising, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There is a growing need for nurses around the country – and this may have to do with a survey that showed 55 percent of the nurses in the country retiring by the year 2020.

In North Carolina, a registered nurse earns a salary of about $60,960 for the year, while LPNs earn $40,870. The average median salary for CNAs is approximately $24,010. Actual earnings depend upon the shifts worked as well as the facility itself.

There is a shortage in North Carolina for nurses, though it’s not one of the top 10 states. There are more opportunities in the larger cities, including Raleigh-Durham.

Some of the top employers in North Carolina for nurses include Carolina’s Medical Center, Duke University Hospital, North Carolina Baptist Hospital and Forsyth Medical Center. There are also a number of private institutions and nursing homes that are looking for CNAs, LPNs and RNs.
