Ohio Nursing Education
There are only a handful of nursing schools in Ohio, which includes Case Western University. Students also have the ability to go to one of the neighboring states to get their degree. It is also important to note that the graduation rate across the country is only about 67%, which shows students need to be dedicated in their studies. To earn a bachelor’s degree will take four years while a master’s degree will take an additional two years, bringing the total time for education up to six years.

The requirement for becoming a CNA is a certificate program, whereas LPNs and RNs need actual degrees. For those who want to work in a clinical setting, a master’s degree will be needed.

The cost of education will greatly depend on the school that is attended. There are a number of scholarships which can be applied for – some coming directly from the schools, others coming from the government and local hospitals.

Due to the lack of schools in the state, Ohio is one of the top 10 states for nursing shortages. Due to the shortages, however, it opens up more job opportunities. The average salary for an LPN is $40,370 while the average salary for an RN is $61,710, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. CNAs, on a national average, earn about $24,010 a year.

The Labor Occupational Outlook from the BLS states that nursing is the number one growing career field in the United States. Much of this has to do with the fact that, of the nurses surveyed, 55 percent plan to retire by the year 2020. This is creating a number of vacancies in positions around the country.
